The avian shelter was started in 2006 when 42 Macaws, Cockatoos, and
Amazons were abandoned in a house. Since the case was an active
investigation, the birds had to be housed as evidence at the expense of
the foster parents. In the following years, with the downfall of the
economy, other birds have been found abandoned in homes. A need for an
avian sanctuary in Oklahoma has steadily grown and so had the feed bill.
Lack of rain has raised the prices of not only groceries but food for
parrots too. As much as we would like to have volunteers, no one can
afford time or pay to help so the sanctuary's sole volunteer is also the
founder. There is also a handful of paid employees who enjoy caring for
all the birds. Our goal with the sanctuary is to provide a permanent
safe home for these birds, and hopefully someday establish a 501.c.3 corporation.
